Speaker Boehner’s Principled Stand

House Speaker John Boehner went on the offensive today, taking a strong, principled stand against government spending.  Speaker Boehner made clear he was committed to cutting government spending, even as Democrats hype the potential for a government shutdown.

During his weekly press conference, Speaker Boehner said the following:

  • We have some Democrats here on Capitol Hill threatening to shut down the government rather than to cut spending and to follow the will of the American people

  • When we say we’re going to cut spending, read my lips, we’re going to cut spending.

  • I am not going to move any kind of short-term CR at current levels.

Take note of that last point – no short-term CR at current levels.

Many Congressional liberals want the government to operate on a series of short-term funding extensions that would lock government spending in at record high levels.  Americans did not go to the polls in November to lock in reckless spending; November was about reducing the size, scope and cost of government.

Speaker Boehner drew a bright line today, and Heritage Action applauds his principled stand.

  1. Am sure it is a difficult decision to stand up against the Dems to control spending, but there is no other choice and it is up to the Republicans to take this hard step and save our country from further obscene and outrageous spending. Save our country for our children and grandchildren. Gov’t payrolls must be brought under control, so also with the unions.

    • Unfortunately, the “dirty work” of cutting is left for the mature (Rep. House majority) because the children (liberals, Dems, Obama) have had their spending tantrums and won’t cut and do without with a childish, spastic fit!

We as adult do what is often not popular with the children or the childish because wisdom, not rants, dictate our decision-making.

Let the big government, premature babies cry all they want … it’s time to CUT, CUT, CUT and to save our household for the future!

  3. Thank you Speaker Boehner for taking a principled stand and for not doing a Pelosi “let’s pass the bill so that we can see what’s in it.” You lost the vote, but you are winning the battle with the American people. Trust that!
