"Read My Lips": Don’t Blink, Cut Spending

In conservative circles, “read my lips” is a loaded phrase that invokes President George H.W. Bush’s broken promise and subsequent tax increase.  Republican lawmakers understand the connotation, which is why many observers were shocked when Speaker John Boehner invoked the phrase, saying: “read my lips, we’re going to cut spending.”

The battle lines are now drawn.  By invoking that phrase, Speaker Boehner sent a clear message to the American people: House Republicans will not, under any circumstance, back down.  Heritage Action strongly supports Speaker Boehner’s principled stand.

Last week, the House passed a funding measure that would cut $61 billion in spending below current levels.  President Obama issued a veto threat and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid called the cuts “unworkable” and “even more draconian than we originally anticipated.”  Instead, Mr. Reid wants a continuing resolution that will continue to fund the government at current levels.

Heritage Action believes any short-term funding measure must contain cuts that are, at minimum, on par with the House-passed bill and all the appropriation riders that block implementation of Obamacare, EPA action on global warming, etc.

And Speaker Boehner made clear the House will not “move any kind of short-term CR at current levels.”  Of course, as the Politico points out, Mr. Reid’s position is the polar opposite: “sign off on the status quo or risk being blamed for a shutdown.”

Let’s be crystal clear about what is going on here: Washington liberals are determined to shut down the government in order to avoid cutting federal spending. Mr. Reid and his fellow big-government liberals are proposing to lock in our current recklessly high levels of spending with a 30-day continuing resolution that kicks the can down the road and avoids tough decisions. Moving a short-term funding measure that does not enact real cuts is unacceptable.

The message sent on November 2nd was clear: cut spending and rein in out of control government. Liberals in Congress and the Administration are determined to thwart the will of the people by locking in the status quo spending. Like their counterparts in Wisconsin, Ohio, Indiana, Colorado, New Jersey and more and more states by the day, Washington liberals are completely out of touch clinging to their ideological beliefs while the country racks up huge deficits and our children’s futures are mortgaged.

Speaker Boehner is right to draw a line in the sand in the same way that practical conservative Governors across the country are doing. November 2nd was about upending the status quo and restoring fiscal sanity. It was about installing people in public office who had the stomach to make the tough decisions needed to avoid fiscal ruin. And it was about speaking plainly to the American people about what must be done.

Speaker Boehner is right to stand with the American people. He must not blink.

  1. Please use the right word. The expression is “rein in” and comes from guiding a horse. “Reign” is what monarchs do – look up the words, if you don’t believe me. I live in Oregon and know about the other rain.

  3. I am utterly amazed that these pinheads cannot find $500Billion in cuts. There has to be a pork barrell full of things that can be trimmed. How many kickbacks would it take to do what they want to cut now?

    • The answer is entitlements…no one has the guts to tackle the difficult work that must be done to truly rein in spending. That’s where the real money goes and what has been driving us down the path to perdition. And of course if we could restore the Constitution and get rid of all the agencies that are unconstitutional, return the education system to the states, and trash the Federal Reserve, I would feel very hopeful.

  5. It is obvious we are in a revolution no less important then the first Americian Revolution. This time, the enemy is within the very government and system our forefathers set up to protect our freedoms. These socialist have done their homework and have a large army of entitlement junkies that will do what ever they feel is necessary to maintain their handouts. The question is what are all of us willing to give up to re-gain control of our individual freedoms? This will effect all of us. These sly socialists have worked a long time to make each of us dependent on the government. The largest employer in the world is the U.S. Government then there is state and local jobs. Let’s not forget social security, medicare just to name a few things that have made all of us dependent on them. I for one am willing to work until the day I die. I have paid into this system since I was 11 years old and I am now 66 but they can put their benefits where the sun don’t shine if that is what it takes to free of their grip on our lives. If we are going to re-gain our independence, it will require some sacrafice on the part of all of us.

    • Amen to everything you said, and I’m with you all the way. My husband is retired from the military, and frankly, we worry about losing that check. We would forget social security, even though we’ve both paid into it for years.

I am more than willing to sacrifice for my grandchildren. I don’t belong to a union.

  7. We did not get were we are overnight. The left has been working on their plan for years and years. As Constitutional conservatives we must remain presistent on a consistent basis. Our fight for freedom and liberty will never be over. So we all need to stay the course and be involved with our elected officials. GOD BLESS our One Nation Under God.

  9. The socialists are good planners and patient.
They long ago infiltrated our school teachers with their philosophy. From Kindergarten ( a German word) through university, each student is bathed in liberal ideology. The Forth Estate promotes the same in what and how “news” is reported. Many people are unaware of the difference in liberal and conservative principles. There is a new awakening in the hearts of people. They are understanding that there is a need for conservative belief and actions based on the philosophy. They are willing to press the chosen representatives to do what is necessary: reduce the cost of government. We must press hard!

  11. There are two HUGE reasons that we need to rein in our spending:

The so-called stimulus spending over the past two years and the back-breaking Obamacare bill, just passed into law. Between these two we are facing the largest deficits in America’s history. The first one brought us nothing in the way of a ‘stimulus’ and the second is on target to suck our bank accounts dry over the next few short years. What we need to do is two-fold:

Call in those ‘stimulus funds and shut down the money printing presses.

Throw the entire ‘healthcare’ law out and start over in a bipartisan manner.

This alone will save us $Trillions of dallars.

They are trying to save $100 billion dollars, a mere drop in the bucket. Nothing more than grandstanding and political hoopla. Smoke and mirrors.

Stop the dog and pony show and start making some real cuts.

And by the way, Social Security and Medicare recipients are NOT entitlers. But they DO vote.

  15. The chice is simple cut spending or go bankrupt. The goverment is to big, and the tax payer cannot afford it. Printing more money just leads to hyper-inflation. So if we do not cut spending we go bankrupt.

  17. I have a hard time understanding how anyone cannot figure out that when you have no money, you can’t spend any. But most of the people who keep voting for these insane expenditures are the ignorant and uneducated. (The Gimmees, as we call them). Unfortunately they have been conditioned to believe that they are entitled to have everything whether they earn it or not. The bureaucracy coddles them and expects us (the workers) to understand their unfortunate predicament. Enough is Enough.
