Thoughts from the Reagan Library

Update: after the retreat, Heritage Action CEO Michael Needham outlined our spending game plan.

In defeating Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan changed the course of human history and rescued our nation from its deep malaise.

31 years later — as we near what would have been Reagan’s 100th birthday — America once again needs rescuing.

Liberals in Washington have controlled the reins of power for two years and have worked hard to undermine the legacy of Ronald Reagan. And to date, they have been devastatingly effective.

Over 14 trillion dollars and rising in deficits, double digit unemployment, big-government health care mandates, higher taxes on job creators, American decline abroad, entitlement spending that is deep in the red and a renewed assault on the American family are all the hallmarks of liberal leadership.

Conservatives Members Retreat Opening Dinner

The temptation is to look at the havoc that has been wrought and be depressed. But we have turned the tide before, and with your help we will do it again.

Our determination to do this is the reason that we are in Simi Valley, California at the Reagan Library right now with the most conservative members of the House of Representatives at a retreat entitled, “In the Steps of Reagan.”

We are here not just to honor one of our greatest leaders at the time of his centennial birthday, but more importantly to forge a path forward for our country at this critical juncture.

It is clear to us at Heritage Action that success in this endeavor will take real leadership. And we are encouraged to see the spirit of 1980 alive and well in the hearts and minds of these members of the 112th Congress.

We are only one day in to the three-day meeting, but already the talk from these new leaders is forward-looking, optimistic and some may even say, “sunny”. Remind you of anyone?

How do we get back to a Constitutional Congress? That is the question these members are asking over and over again. And it is the question that is informing every policy discussion. This is the right question, because it forces people to think about what our Founders intended.

Over the course of the next couple days we will have conversations about drastically cutting federal spending, connecting with the grassroots (that’s you!), spurring economic growth, reforming entitlements, reforming the tax code and much more. But again, the underlying question in all these discussions is about the constitutional role of Congress!

At Heritage Action, we are encouraged that a new crop of leaders in Washington is thinking about the right things and we are excited to be able to help them do this.

But, now it is up to you to help us remind them that they have the support to do more than just think about reforming Washington. Our time is short, and we must follow through with action if we are to truly follow in Reagan’s footsteps and rescue our great nation.

Thank you for all you do to help in this cause.

Tim Chapman

  1. Enjoy the Conservative Retreat at the Reagan Library! Good luck with discussing conservative political ideas with the 112th Congressional Members.
Happy 100th Birthday to President Ronald Reagan.

  3. I would like to see the return to a Constitutional Congress. However, I see the real need in that of a Constitutional judiciary from the Supreme Court through all levels of the Federal system.
First off lifetime appointments should be eliminated. Decisions that cannot pass a strict originalist Constitutional muster should be vacated and the appointee should face removal after no more than three such decisions.
Prior bad law should be vacated. Making law and policy should be solely within the parameters of the Legislature.
A Constitutional Congress can be thwarted at the Supreme Court and that abridges the enunciation of powers as ratified.

  5. I don’t know if anyone will actually read this, but I believe that as much as I’m inclined to be optimistic about any efforts to restore sanity to government, the current levels of corruption in the highest offices of the land make it highly unlikely that any progress can be made.

I don’t for one moment believe that our President, nor any of those with whom he has surrounded himself, nor the Senate majority leader and those in bed with him have the best interest of the USA in mind. It will be two years of stalemate, sitting out the current ‘reign’ of Republicans in the house, knowing that the memory of the citizens of this land is only one sound bite long, and that in 2012 there’ll be a very good chance the tables will be turned again, and then they’ll have 4 years to truly do their dastardly deeds.

All our plans will fail if we will not consider the underlying causes for the current state of affairs and seek to address those. Some of these in my understanding of the nature of God as revealed in the Bible are the following:

Most importantly, as a nation we have seen and failed to stem the efforts of ruling any and all recognition of Almighty God as Creator and Sustainer of his creation from the public arena.

Second, this has resulted in the murder of upwards of 53 million ‘innocent’ babies that would otherwise have been productive citizens- just for the sake of convenience. Does anyone in congress and our President ever try to think of the horrendous evil of this? To think that the First Lady and women in congress, if they are truly that, can actually underwrite this evil, is appalling beyond words.

Third, the unbridled explosion of sexual promiscuity, and its accompanying perversions that have infected nearly all areas of society, not the least of which are the efforts by homosexuals to foist their perverted life-styles on us by using judges willing to legislate from the bench. Is there not a sane person left who cannot see that ‘marriage’ of such is totally against nature? One may disregard the Bible, but it does not take away the fact that it is The Word of God, and that the abomination this wickedness is to God will ultimately be judged by Him, and so will the nation that has allowed this to happen.

Third, the arrogance of the those who think they have it in their power and see it as their calling “to save the planet.” It is God’s planet, He will preserve it until His purposes for it have been completed. At that time will be the end, and the ushering in of His everlasting Kingdom in which righteousness will dwell, and all evil doers will be cast into everlasting hell.

In short, one cannot ignore the fact that for a long time already the judgment of God is manifestly upon us in the evil with which we are daily confronted and which threatens to destroy the liberties we have so long enjoyed, and yes, squandered in consuming it upon our own lusts.

I don’t for a moment pretent to be a ‘prophet’, but I do know the Scriptures, and the God of the Scriptures, who so loved this sin-sick world that he gave his only Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, that whoever believes on him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not sent his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through him might be saved. Cf. John 3:16, 17.

    • Very well stated and Scripturally right. Until Americans who are believers, have received Jesus Christ, have believed the Holy Scriptures have precedence over the Constitution of the United Sates and are willing to be disciples and follow Christ, this nation will writhe in all the consequences of sin and sins. In order to know the “true truth” (Schaeffer) one must know and believe God’s Word. Nationally speaking we are far from that condition.

    • Bernard: I couldn’t agree with you more. There is one big problem. Many people don’t have a clue as to how their reps vote on different issues. In other words, too many people shouldn’t even be allowed to vote, & alas, there are too many Liberal Democrats, who just plain don’t care.

  7. I sent Heritage a study I did on the salaries of Congress, their Staffs, and all the committees. The study was based on the data reported by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) as recorded by http://www.legistorm.com. I followed this up with another one with a narrower focus, “The Hair Cut/Styling, Manicure, and Shoe Shine shop of the Senate, all paid for by “We the People”. The total cost of Congress Salaries as of fiscal year 2010 was $1,160,000,000 without expenses and travel. You could start there and maybe “We the People” will see they are serious about cutting the cost of government. Should you not be able to locate those studies, e-mail me and I will be pleased to send them again. Semper Fi

    • The study used the CAO not the CBO. Congressional ACCOUNTING Office. Sorry I was listening to something else and the error crept into my mind.

  9. I believe the key issues are on the table; limited / constitutional government and control of spending. The challenge will be keeping focus on this and not allowing the liberals to cloud the discussion with their feel-good wailings. Keep it simple, the good people of this country are ready for some real hope and change…

  11. Both my common sense and now multiple investment advisors have told me basically the same thing: the “window of opportunity” to try & fix our nation’s financial problems is rapidly closing. Alan Greenspan (former head of the Federal Reserve) had said we were on an unsustainable path and had given us 10 years to fix the problem some time ago. I knew this was overly optimistic, I thought is was more like 1-2 years. More recently, Greenspan announced that he was wrong, he now gives us about five more years to a critical tipping point leading to an unavoidable financial meltdown. I now think we might have 2-5 years. But Obama & the Democrats in Congress are still out of touch with reality. No hope there. Sadly, there is not much hope with the Republicans in Congress who are looking to make what amounts to only token Federal budget cuts. Even if they got 2.5 TRILLION DOLLARS in cuts over 10 years (which is what some of the more “aggressive” budget cutters are proposing), it would still lead to about 10 TRILLION DOLLARS more added to the Federal debt over 10 years. Our only hope: BALANCE THE BUDGET NOW & START TO PAY DOWN THE DEBT (SAY 100 BILLION/YR) as soon as possible. But I see neither the President, the Democrats, nor the Republicans willing to do that. So Rome will continue to burn & the Barbarians are gathering at the gate as our political leaders play the fiddle!!

  13. Getting back to a Constutional Congress is like hearding 4 year olds; difficult, but not impossible.

In thinking on this matter one must also take in mind the Constution itself. It is often seen as a quick solution to talk about term limits, elimination of lifetime appointments and the like. However, if we turn to the founders ‘thinking’ on some of these matters then the result is different. For, the founders considered these things and rejected them for good reason. The best term limits are the people.

Another target of Constutional tinkering is the Electoral College. The only tinkering in that area should be how the electors vote. They should vote according to the results in the district they are representing. Thus that should be revised to achieve that result. Winner of the popular vote in a state taking all EC votes is counter to the one-man-one-vote principle.

The true litmus test for a jurist is how well they know and rule by the constution. No what if’s on certain themes.

Yee ha! Let’s start hearding 4 yer olds. We’ll get help from the true constutionalist legislator and the people who put them there.

  15. These Representatives of the people will gather together and discuss the critical issues of today and the solutions needed. Bear in mind that it is the lack of education that has lead us here. The lack of and the omission of our past history has been lack luster at best. It will take a very long time to rectify the damage that has been done to our young by the lack of our founding history and the failed systems of the past. Communism, Socialism, NAZI and Fascism. Even if we can re-institute the truth of the past we will have the damage done to those who have been duped. It will be decades before we can turn this around and education is the root and the key to a lasting effect.

But of all the views of this law none is more important, none more legitimate, than that of rendering the people the safe, as they are the ultimate, guardians of their own liberty. For this purpose the reading in the first stage, where they will receive their whole education, is proposed, as has been said, to be chiefly historical. History by apprising them of the past will enable them to judge of the future; it will avail them of the experience of other times and other nations; it will qualify them as judges of the actions and designs of men; it will enable them to know ambition under every disguise it may assume; and knowing it, to defeat its views.

  17. I agree with the comments, but where is the next Reagan? You speak of Reagan saving us from the Carter legacy and he did. I am starting to think that McCarthy saved us from facing the current situation in the fifties. Nearly 50% of the population does not follow politics enough to see thru Obama and they are victums of a Progressive education pulbic–no prayer, no pledge of allegiance, etc. We need a candidate that will speak out on the need to reform entitlements in a way that can win–a tough job! An aside, I loved Palin’s WTF quip relative to Obama’s Win The Fulture (WTF) state of the nation speech.

    • President Reagan is gone from us but what embodied the man is not! We need only look to ourselves and we will find the embodiment still exists!

Reagan said (paraphrase) “you only need to look and you will find your heroes!

Thank you for your service sir and may God Bless you!

  19. “Building a Conservative Congress” is an excellent idea. Thank you to The Reagan Library & Foundation for hosting the conference, to Heritage Action for America for organizing it, and to the House members for attending it. As a supporter of the Library and Heritage, I hope that additional events will be planned to educate people about President Reagan’s conservative principles & accomplishments, and, to promote conservative GOP candidates & policies.

  21. The last Democrat President I admired was Jack Kennedy. I was in college when he was assassinated. I reread his inaugural address on the 50th anniversary ot its delivery. One of the lines I flagged was. . .”the same revolutionary beliefs for which our forebears fought are still at issue around the globe–the belief that the rights of man come not from the generosity of the state but from the hand of God.” Ronald Reagan could have spoken those words. Barack Obama could not. In our efforts at renewal it does not hurt to quote a sensible Democrat like JFK and note the contrast. All the best of God’s Brightest Blessings.Thank you, JL Penfold

  23. There is a worthwhile of chunk of conservative sentiment in the ranks and files of classroom teachers, if only either the Republicans of Conservatives would quit attacking them and instead invite their solutions to the table.

The Teacher’s Unions do not speak for all of us, but you’ve got to stop blindless attacks on senority and tenure and realize you need to refain from throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

Repubs./Conservatives teachers can lead the way to real reform. But we need your help to fight back against the stupidity of the Social/Progressive Engineers.

BTW – Is the retreat going on right now?

  25. 1. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

    2. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

    3. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

    4. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

    5. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

    6. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

There are many who know what Psalm 23 means. However, if you live long enough you will have experienced the Valley. But you have never been alone in that Valley because He was with you. You either put yourself there or He lead you there for a cleansing and your own good..

Our country is in that Valley and we as a people allowed it to happen. So let it be our lesson to learn as God’s people. The lesson He is providing us; showing us. Open your heart and you will open your mind and we will emerge from the Valley a better people than when we entered into it.

This is my hope and my prayer.

  27. Socialism: Does it Fit Mankind?
    By: Phil Davis
    October 12, 2009

Socialism would not work in a society and particular for most individuals. Because it stunts their desire to make more money for themselves because it would be taken away and given to others who have less than you do! Here is an example: You are an electrician and you make $12 per hour. Likewise, one who sweeps and cleans up your work area makes $12 per hour; get it?

Do you know who has a higher standard of living in a Socialistic form of government? Those who hold the power over you. Do you know why you hold out hope for more “things” or for someone else to supplement your own bills? Because it will make you feel better. So for the sake of argument, lets say Obama and his machine is successful in turning this country into a Socialistic regime. Will you be happier? For a short time, those who crave relief will be happier. Why only a short time? Because you are going to want more things later on. Will you most likely get them? No. Why? Because there is only so much money to redistribute around and besides you only get the amount of money the State thinks you need. Will this make you happy that you are not going to get what you want or need? No. Will you eventually get tired of limited freedoms and the limited potential to increase personal wealth? Yes.

I will explain in detail why a Socialistic system does not work. Unless of course, there is force behind the government that prevents stopping it like most Socialistic forms of government. Stay tuned for the shocking answer! Find out why only Capitalism creates the greatest happiness and potential for the individual; based on scientific proof!

Abraham Maslow developed a theory of personality that has influenced a number of different fields, including education. This wide influence is due in part to the high level of practicality of Maslow’s theory. This theory accurately describes many realities of personal experiences. Many people find they can understand what Maslow says. They can recognize some features of their experience or behavior which is true and identifiable but which they have never put into words.

Maslow is a humanistic psychologist. Humanists do not believe that human beings are pushed and pulled by mechanical forces, either of stimuli and reinforcements (behaviorism) or of unconscious instinctual impulses (psychoanalysis). Humanists focus upon potentials. They believe that humans strive for an upper level of capabilities. Humans seek the frontiers of creativity, the highest reaches of consciousness and wisdom. This has been labeled “fully functioning person”, “healthy personality”, or as Maslow calls this level, “self-actualizing person.”

Maslow has set up a hierarchic theory of needs. All of his basic needs are instinctoid, equivalent of instincts in animals. Humans start with a very weak disposition that is then fashioned fully as the person grows. If the environment is right, people will grow straight and beautiful, actualizing the potentials they have inherited. If the environment is not “right” (and mostly it is not) they will not grow tall and straight and beautiful.

Maslow has set up a hierarchy of five levels of basic needs. Beyond these needs, higher levels of needs exist. These include needs for understanding, esthetic appreciation and purely spiritual needs. In the levels of the five basic needs, the person does not feel the second need until the demands of the first have been satisfied, nor the third until the second has been satisfied, and so on. Maslow’s basic needs are as follows:

    Physiological Needs

These are biological needs. They consist of needs for oxygen, food, water, and a relatively constant body temperature. They are the strongest needs because if a person were deprived of all needs, the physiological ones would come first in the person’s search for satisfaction.

    Safety Needs

When all physiological needs are satisfied and are no longer controlling thoughts and behaviors, the needs for security can become active. Adults have little awareness of their security needs except in times of emergency or periods of disorganization in the social structure (such as widespread rioting). Children often display the signs of insecurity and the need to be safe.

Needs of Love, Affection and Belonging

When the needs for safety and for physiological well-being are satisfied, the next class of needs for love, affection and belongingness can emerge. Maslow states that people seek to overcome feelings of loneliness and alienation. This involves both giving and receiving love, affection and the sense of belonging.

    Needs for Esteem

When the first three classes of needs are satisfied, the needs for esteem can become dominant. These involve needs for both self-esteem and for the esteem a person gets from others. Humans have a need for a stable, firmly based, high level of self-respect, and respect from others. When these needs are satisfied, the person feels self-confident and valuable as a person in the world. When these needs are frustrated, the person feels inferior, weak, helpless and worthless.

    Needs for Self-Actualization

When all of the foregoing needs are satisfied, then and only then are the needs for self-actualization activated. Maslow describes self-actualization as a person’s need to be and do that which the person was “born to do.” “A musician must make music, an artist must paint, and a poet must write.” These needs make themselves felt in signs of restlessness. The person feels on edge, tense, lacking something, in short, restless. If a person is hungry, unsafe, not loved or accepted, or lacking self-esteem, it is very easy to know what the person is restless about. It is not always clear what a person wants when there is a need for self-actualization.

The hierarchic theory is often represented as a pyramid, with the larger, lower levels representing the lower needs, and the upper point representing the need for self-actualization. Maslow believes that the only reason that people would not move well in direction of self-actualization is because of hindrances placed in their way by society.

If the Socialists (Democrats), which are currently in power have their way Socialism will be implemented in this country. However, that would only be their first step to total domination of the American public, including possible Fascism. In a Socialist controlled nation the lines of natural human achievement are stunted allowing only the most poor and cash strapped to complete a partial Needs of “Love/Belonging“. While sending the rest to the bottom along with them (redistribution). However, the maintaining of this partial level (Love/Belonging) would be very limited, and short lived due to rationing of health care, high taxes, limited employment choices, and dwindling resources which would be continually eroded through rationing, thus keeping most at the “Safety level“. So at best case scenario, this level can only be partially supported by a socialistic regime for a short period of time. Now factor in population growth and this problem is magnified; just look at China! As I indicated earlier, this achievement will only suffice for a short while until the desire for the next higher natural needs automatically kick in. The diagram will show you where the needs for all will (except the power elite) be set in the United States if the country continues down the socialist road. Achievement will be stopped because there would be limited personal incentive to excel any further due to extreme governmental controls and stunted payment/rewards for success. The lack of personal reward in ones personal natural climb to achieve would be severely cut. In fact all the goals above “Love/Belonging” is twisted and used by socialists as their reasoning for implementing total governmental control over everyone’s life. Indicating that it is those who achieve, that block you from excelling. While in reality it is those that create opportunity through enterprise that opens up further opportunities for you. In this reality only those who hold the power reap the benefits above the “Love/Belonging” level. Their standard of living is far above all in the country that do not share in the power! Capitalism is the only near perfect pathway for all to better themselves, including all around them that reach for that next “rung!”

  28. Socialism: Does it Fit Mankind?

29. Mr. Chapman, thank you for your tireless efforts and constructive info. I am grateful to The Heritage Foundation, its knowledge, leadership and direction. Frank, Greenspan is a mindless puppet and idiot; he has said so himself in so many words. Anyone that listens to or repeats his drivel may be sorely misdirected. Personally, I would afford him no credence. Bernard Taverne, very wise words, thank you for taking the time and commitment to voice them. Lloyd Carter, thank you for your continued service and due diligence; directing your research to the Heritage Foundation is most likely quite constructive. The rest of us, myself included, may best serve our nation with action that backs up our words. Be vigilant with your contacts to the here and now; your Representatives and Senators hold the key to your voice, be certain the hear and reflect your opinion every day.

  31. Dig Deeper: Stop the Government Tyrannical Power Move

Do you remember Obama trying to put a damper on Charity? It made one scratch their head as to why. I believe I have figured out the why.

The government has been hell bent on destroying the economy, starting with the housing market; pushing loans to those who had no way of repaying them. Then those instruments (bad mortgages) were bundled then pushed as AAA rated investments by investment companies. The snow ball (key domino) was in play and the rest is the destroyed economy. Add in out of control taxation in the first place at all levels of government and you have an acrid recipe for economic disaster. The government taking tax revenue and pushing into newer type industries that had no hope of sustaining jobs thereby depleting the peoples money (tax revenue) supply. The basis of their weapon (Marxists) is our own natural instincts to survival! In other words “got less give less for charity”. Those who still have enough for themselves have had to hold back investment and jobs, even letting their own workers go. Those who would normally give a certain amount to charity would also tighten their belts.

So, what is the key to unlocking this shackle the government has fashioned for us? We have to dig deeper for charity for those who are suffering on the most basic levels. The Marxists are banking on Americans to hold back and give very little which will fire up many of the poor as an ally for the government in their take-over move! The government on it’s basic level does not have enough muscle (people) to back them at present. Crime is most likely on the rise and it has always been with us; expect it to grow more!

To stop the Marxists at the Federal level we as a people must give more to charity. If we continue not to give more (even small giving) it will be our undoing and the loss of individual freedom will be complete. Ushering in mass tyranny from a central totalitarian government!
