Spending: What’s Next?

Last night, the Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) pulled the bloated $1.1 trillion omnibus from the floor.  The turnabout was rapid and left things in a state of flux – funding for the government runs out Saturday night.  While the defeat of the pork-laden omnibus represents a victory for taxpayers and our political system, there is much work to be done.

According to The Hill, Reid will work with Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) to advance a short-term continuing resolution.  A CR, as it is commonly called, funds the government for a specified period at the previous level of funding – no earmarks, no money for Obamacare and no special interest handouts.

A short-term CR would be great news for taxpayers, as it would allow newly elected members to take a cut out of spending early next year.  And if there is one thing we’ve learned from the election, it’s that Americans are eager for change.  Cutting spending would be a drastic and welcomed change.

  1. Republicans definitely need to see what grassroots every day Americans want. Too many from both sides get elected then get inside the beltway and forget what the real world and their constituents said they want.

I support a CR and a budget with absolutely NO PORK for anyone!! Why should my tax dollars go to another state just for a pet project? Or let someone such as a couple of NC representatives give a pay back to the pork industry.

    • My sentiments exactly, and I am very much heartened to see people who think the way I do.

No Pork, no money for obamacare, just a plain CR to continue running the government and then go home and chill out! And reflect on what we the people are telling you!

      • I thiunk the next thing that needs to be done also is cut the salaries of these politicians and the perks they enjoy! I think most of them have forgotten why they are there! This isn’t meant to be a career! We also need term iimits!

        • I think like everybody else does,Take half of everybodys saliary in the white House&Senate&Congress&cut there time there in office to 12yrs only that way we would not build up an empire for them selves.

  3. I am in favor of a short term CR provided that it remains short term. The goal is not maintaining spending at its current level but reducing the level of government spending. Approve the CR for the time being and allow the newly seated congress to take this up in January with a focus on reducing the spending levels.

  5. I am in favor of a minimalist short term CR with very specific limits to only the most essential government funding requirements such as the military, law enforcement, VA, Transportation, FDA, and Post Office but not full DHEW, Presidential Travel, FCC, lame duck Congress or Dept of Commerce which can wait until the new congress is seated and votes for a full budget.

    • Gerald YOU HIT IT OUT OF THE PARK. When we do start cutting spending we need to demand that congress lead the way with a salary cut of 20%.

  7. I am also in favor of a short term CR. I just hope our newly elected officials will take their new positions seriously and help keep this country glued together by cutting spending. Unfortunately I expect many of us to be angry and hurt by the cuts, but it IS necessary if we are to survive.

  9. You are easily fooled if you think anyone won here.
The REAL American people continue to be used as pawns. It will take the blood of the current two party system running in the streets to wake up the few that will remain standing. Even the new wave is already fat from gorging on PORK.

    • Jeff Wisgerhof says: Even the new wave is already fat from gorging on PORK.

Now how can the incoming legislators have a say in the current ‘Pork session”?

Those that asked for the Pork are out bound loosers that were gourging on our money, THEY did not get the message.

Stop using the lamestream media talking points, the bad water is about to be thrown out.

  11. i want to see the Change we really are in need of, and that’s to rid the congress of the senators that think only of themselves, not the American public.

  13. You bet I’m in favor of a short-term CR! It lets the high-spending congress know that We The People are tired of out-of-control spending and this will also be a fine incentive to encourage our newly-elected Senators and Representatives to be very serious about their pre-election promises of tax cuts and smaller government.

  15. Harry Reid is blinded by his power and spend-mentality agenda. That’s all. You could tell by the anger in his voice that he has contempt for the citizens that forced his hand. If it were up to him and his fellow spenders the Omnibus Bill would have passed – and sleasy Harry would say he “worked hard for the people.”

The CR is a wise move for the legislature to take right now. I am dismayed by the disdain the senate and congress has for the taxpayers.

  17. This was an IMMENSE loss for the left. Not only are billions in pork down to the sea in ships, democrats will NO LONGER control the congressional budget/spending through the end of next year, effectively taking that right away from the incoming FAR more conservative house! Now the agenda can be set by a republican controlled house and a much stronger and more conservative republican presence in the senate. The left had been counting on this underhanded tactic to completely tie the hands of the new congress. Congrats to the republican party for keeping the RINO sell-outs in line.

  19. It was great that the taxpayers were not burdened with neither a tax increase nor the pork laden omnibus. However, the renewal of the corn fuel & other subsidies and the extention of the unemployment benefits are business as usual wasteful spending.

  23. I do not know what kind of amendment would have to be passed to limit the powers of the “lame ducks,” but after watching this debacle I am all in favor of something being done to place limits on those leaving office and their ability to ram through pork laden legislation as we’ve seen this week!

Will they ever get it???? If the average American has to live within their means, why shouldn’t Congress?

    • I agree that there should be limits on what a lame duck session can do.
Actually, in some countries, I believe, that what we should have is no time between elections and inaugurations-some countries are set up that way.

Congress needs to understand that they work for us, not the other way around.

  25. I am for a short term CR. No more Pork. Let Congress work with the method “One Subject, One Bill”, don’t hide anything! I’m against the Federal land grab in the omnibus bill, the funding for the misguided Obamacare, the subsidies for corn fuel, the across the board extension of unemployment insurance, etc., etc. This was a last ditch effort to get as much of our money to spend in the way they please.

  27. We need to cut out the printing of money too. China has already withdrawn its support of our dollar.
Other countries will follow suit. If it is not stopped we will go into hyperinflation. $1000 for a loaf of bread? It is possible!

  31. Let the government shut down for several months. At least during that time they won’t spend what we don’t have. The government I believe is the problem. Let them take a few months off. unless they are going to secure the borders, deport the illegals, stop obamacare, roll back the spending, they will only do more harm. I’m sick of the mess they have created and I’m sick of them. They may all go home we will be better off without them!

  33. The omnibus bill appears to be dead. However, lurking in the final few days of this corrupt left-wing party are the: Dream Act (amnesty for illegals), Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, the Start Treaty, and Cap and Trade.
The time for Republican/Conservative/Independents has come for them to speak the words that they were told during the health-care “debate.” We should now be saying: “We won, you lost.” No compromise without significant budget and federal employee reductions.

  35. Why can’t it be law or proceedure that each bill pass on its own merit “NO RIDERS”. You want a payout put up as a stand-alone. I don’t know one household that says ” We are buying a loaf of bread, why not a car too”.

  37. This is a fine first step. However, all the talk about keeping spending at the levels of 2010 is ridiculous. The spending level of 2010 is historically high. We need a new congress that begins to look at all departments of government for REDUCTIONS in spending.

    • Would like to see a government spending freeze. Take the privilege away, for at least a year and let them think about what they are doing and how they are spending this money. As mad as I am at the earmarks, I would like to know who in the world has the guts to ask for this money in the first place and how can they justify the amounts, and the use of this money, when the priorities of our country should be focused of the fundamental basics of running the country, and winning the war. Wish someone had some common sense, and came from a humble background. Some of these politicians have never gone hungry, gone without, or been overwhelmed with how to keep their family under a roof. The only word that comes to mind to describe the government as a whole, and especially Obama…..detached or maybe I should say… indifferent.

  39. I can agree to a short-term CR. But do I trust Mitch McConnell to work with Dirty Harry? NO, absolutely not. McConnell’s compromise with Obama on the Tax Cut Bill was definitely not a smart move and enough to convince me that it is time for good ole Mitch to get his walking papers. We need someone like Paul Ryan to take a stance against Reid and construct a workable CR until the new members of the 112th Congress are on board.

  41. I think the Republicans need to block every piece of legislation the dems put forth until the budget is set. No new bills until then. If it causes a Govt shutdown, so be it. At least there can’t be any spending until then. Right now, no Govt would be better then the worthless men and women there are right now, causing the worst damage to America than ever before in our nation’s history. It may be high time Americans take a stand and abolish this admin. and the Pres. and instill a totally new form of Govt and leadership. Our chances would be better that way.

  43. Would like to see all government empoyees from top to bottom have a 10 percent cut in pay. As far as I am concerned, they need to be the first to feel the pain of the economy and the last to reap its rewards. Would like our country to have surplus of funds sometime in my lifetime. As much as our country produces, you would think it would be wise to have the deficet paid off, and have money for a rainy day. After all, most responsible citizens do without, save when they have to, and always try to pay their bills on time. Why in the world shouldn’t we expect the government to do no less????

  45. When dingy Harry Reid gives up a bill my first thought is Why? When you consider everything else he has on his plate – DREAM Act, DADT etc., etc. and he only has a Saturday to do it I wonder what is his real, true hidden agenda. Just remember – It Aint Over Till It’s Over!

  47. I’m glad to see that Mitch McConnell twisted some arms to unite his party and help defeat Reid’s legislation. It’s troubling to read that Reid and other Democrats still haven’t gotten the message, so by all means, we can’t let up on expressing our views to our elected officials. That’s one great thing I’ve noticed in the aftermath of the 2010 midterm elections… a lot of people that weren’t vocal about the things they care about the most are now speaking out. Don’t let up!

  49. To those Congressional members who wanted higher income earners to be taxed at higher levels, let me encourage you, many of whom are millionaires, that you can willingly pay the extra taxes. We peons won’t mind. You are not businesses, but instead employees of the people, so a little extra money out of your own pockets wouldn’t jeopardize another’s welfare.

Return to the Constitution and honor our obligations to our true friends over seas, boy I can just go on and on about this administration.
God Bless the United States and the Nation of Israel!

  57. Newt Gingrich doesn’t apologize for shutting it down but public opinion soured (Gosh! Maybe that’s because the Captive Media went after Newt!) He said it made Democrats take us seriously. I was hoping Americans would see the tax in their paychecks for a couple of weeks, that kind of lesson is hard to forget “How much money can Obama’s tax hikes hurt?”

Don’t let the Lame Ducks do anything! We already know they are crazy! Or Traitors! It is no joke that Communism leads to Mass Murder and they are giving Obama and his Czars Unconstitutional Powers. They are creating Unconstitutional Forms Of Government. If the House of the 112th doesn’t stop them there will be no Constitutional Representative Government.

  61. How about eliminating of all the Obama Czar positions and their teams. All of the new government spending for each of those groups has to be costing a fortune and should be legislated out. No President should be allowed to put people in so much power, without oversight, again.
