Obama's Tax Deals: See Details and Take Action

Heritage Action opposes Obama’s tax deal. Meeting behind closed doors and hashing out huge swaths of policy with no regard for principle is not good governance.

When the ‘deal’ was finally public, it was far more expansive than originally announced. This is why we called on Congress not to rubber stamp it. You can see the Senate version of Obama’s tax deal here (PDF link). 10/14 Update: the Senate backed the legislation late Monday, setting the stage for a final vote in the next few days. The deal would then go to the House.

The Heritage Foundation has helpful research on two core components of the deal: a newly recreated estate tax and a 13 months extension of unemployment benefits. The ‘death tax’ destroys jobs and unemployment benefits cause people to remain unemployed longer.

Controversial policy items deserve public discourse and legislating. This is Washington at it’s worst: back-room deals resulting in irresponsible spending and new taxes.

Tell Congress enough is enough: make the call now.

Our work on Obama’s tax deal:

Last week, we asked conservative activists across the country to call their Members of Congress with this message: Don’t Rubber Stamp the Tax Deal. Congress heard the message: don’t bring back to the estate tax and don’t tie taxes and spending together. They didn’t do anything.

This morning, The Heritage Foundation’s Morning Bell decried the giveaways in the tax deal, asking why liberals seem set on subsidies for special interests and tax hikes. Our blog covered how instead of responsible tax policy, Obama’s given us the ‘hawkeye handout.’

    • Announce to the world that the U.S. is going to reduce gov. spending 2%/yr/capita forever and tax rates will not ever be increased!!

In 10 years the U.S. will again be the most powerful country in the world in every way!!

    • Without the possibility of repealing the 16th Amendment with a supermajority vote of both houses, the “Fair” tax is nothing but a pipedream and therein, a bad joke at our expense.

The audacity of elected officials and economists alike to constantly push what is clearly impossible as an immediate remedy is an outrage that we usually reserve only for psychotics. Even the treasonous actions of the sniveling left have demonstrated they fully understand incrementalism as they have succesfully destroyed the foundations of our liberty through compromise with RINOs and activist judges making law from the bench.

Understand what game they’re playing on us and tell them what they can do with it.

      • Winghunter erroneously asserts that there is no possibililty of repealling the 16th amendment. It may be difficult but certainly not impossible. (The 12th amendment was superceeded (in effect, repealed) by section 3 of the 22nd amendment, the 18th amendment was repealed by the 21st.) The flat tax is much better than the current income tax. But remember that the original peacetime income tax in 1894 had a rate was 2% on income over $4,000 (about 8 million 2007 dollars), which meant fewer than 10% of households would pay any. That tax was eventually found to be unconstitutional. Subsequently, the 16th amendment passed in 1913 and resulting income tax then had a minumum tax rate of 1% and a maximum rate of 17% for those making over $500,000 ($10 million in 2007 dollars) with assurances that those rates would never change. While the Fair Tax is a proportional consumption tax (a monthly prebate [tax refund] based on the poverty level is given to US citizens) and, by Amendment would be the ONLY federal tax. Howevver, the Flat Tax, depending on which flat tax model is adopted, lends itself to the same Congressional changes that the current Income Tax has experienced and does not preclude other federal taxes. Complexity is a separate issue from flatness of rate structures. Any Flat Tax with deductions has the same prospect for complexity as the 1913 income tax. That complexity has been the legislatures’ favored policy instrument for encouraging numerous undertakings deemed to be socially useful . A Flat Tax can continue this means of social engineering, the Fair Tax cannot.

    • Amen. It’s time for a flat tax or fair tax. Now! Either would result in eliminating a ton of high paying federal jobs and would also take away a lot of the power they have over us right now. They would have no need to argue with eachother about raising or lowering taxes and no more sneaking in all the pork they always do every time they debate anything.

  7. Very disappointing! Why can’t they extend the tax cuts without adding all the pork that will benefit special interest groups? I don’t think Congress learned anything on November 2.

  9. A tax increas as bad as it is, is better than to continue spending. It is irresponsible to that. Pleave, members of congress, we the American people implore you to stop spending. There are two ways to destroy this country: class warfare and unsustainable debt. We seem to be a long way into both. Please stop!!!!

  11. Tax Hike is a raw deal. Looks like we’ll have to clean out the Senate side of Congress in 2012 and that includes Republicans as well.

In a month’s time they have already forgotten the election results.

  13. Make the Bush tax cuts permanent, an bring our goverment back to the rule of law as written in our constitution. NO MORE PORK.

    • Laffer Curve, my friend. read about it. Lower the corporate tax rate and payroll taxes, but not the Income tax rate on the top 2%

  15. Washington Insiders just don’t get it…and that includes plenty of career Republicans and Independents. We need to vote against [all] incumbents in 2012. ALL OF THEM. Want a good book to read? BROKE by Glenn Beck & Kevin Balfe. This book is an immensely interesting study of the monetary policies of Presidential administrations and Congresses since the days of FDR. It is eye-opening and thoroughly researched look into the inner (and ugly) workings of Congress on both sides of the isle. Every American needs to read this book!

    • Everyone…they DO get it. It is US that don’t get it. We expected our “leaders” to look out for the interests of the people, and we are shocked and angrey when the don’t (?). What a surprise. They stopped looking out for use in the early 1900 hundreds. We have beleived the lies too long. They need to be completely replaced and we need to go back to the beginning with an unmovable stand.

    • Glenn Beck is hardly a voice you should listen to when it come to economic policy. There are some taxes that should be lowered and some that should be raised. It’s not as simple as simpletons like Glenn Beck make it out to be.

  17. Let us not be fooled as they will always try to get their agenda passed in whatever way they can. It is time we all stood up to them and pass this with no deals attached.

  19. The number one issue on changes in our government was a reduction in spending. The people voted this the number one priority. What do we get? More pork spending for special interest. Just pass the tax cuts and drop all the other garbage. John Boehner and Mitch McConnell better get their heads out of the sand and listen to the American people or they might find themselves in the same position 63 democrats learned in November. Lose their jobs.

talk, but walking the walk is another horse of a
different color. How about closing down the WH,
and the congress and let the states govern them
themselves? At least I could get to Tallahassee in

  25. Forget the tax deal…don’t except the “Bush (progressive Republican) tax cuts”…lower taxes permanently, decrease unjustified federal spending and stay within our revised budget means. The time is now for corruption to cease. If we compromise, we have already lost.

  27. We actually need tax reform along with spending reduction. How about a nationwide refusal to file with the irs come tax time next year? Any interest in some national “civil disobedience”?

    • Rick, your comments about civil disobedience lacks one thing…a leader. America stopped producing George Washingtons when it rejected God via evolution, embracing Hollywood propaganda, and being dillusioned by corrupt government leadership (WW, FDR, LBJ, etc, etc)
The title of my kids school Christmas performance…”New World Christmas”…no joke. Good news, we’re all invited to join the “celebration”.

  29. REPUBLICANS AREN’T IN CHARGE YET AND YOU ARE ALREADY BLAMING THEM. LET THEM COME INTO OFFICE AND THEN SEE IF THEY HEARD WHAT THE PEOPLE WERE TELLING THEM. IF THEY DIDN’T LISTEN IT WILL BE THEIR TURN TO GO HOME NEXT TIME THEY ARE UP FOR REELECTION! RIGHT NOW THE BALL IS STILL IN THE DEM’S COURT, BLAME THEM FOR ALL THE PORK.

  31. Why is it that this congress and previous ones always always feel it’s so great to TAX small businesses and then turn around to blame conservative for out sourcing. It just seems for ever until the new congress takes over.

  33. As a retired economist, I recognize the indicators that the QE strategy of the Federal Reserve to keep the liberals spending going is likely to lead to both the collapse of the dollar and of the United States as a sovereign country over the next 2 to 5 years. And do little or nothing to get the US economy back on its feet. With a $1.3, $1.4 or $1.5 trillion deficit for 2011, the best thing a Republican House of Representatives can do is defund at least $2 trillion per year in federal spending and cut taxes by 15 %, not keep them the same. Alternatively, make the $2 trillion/ yr. spending cut, abolish the IRS and impose a sales tax so that everybody pays taxes.

  35. These politicians will only understand after we vote them out of office. Let’s call it term limits by vote. My one Missouri senator voted for earmarks, the other for Obamacare. A pox on all of them.

  37. I read a few days ago that the overall tax bill favored Obama and the Democrats – 85% – 15%. Now I know why with all of these add-ons that have been proposed. I am opposed to continuing subsidizing ethanol and other measures that the Democrats want to add onto the bill.
What happens if no action is taken on the tax bill until January 2011?

  39. I sent ALL Republican Senators a fax from my computer asking them not to vote for this. I do something similiar each and every time a stand needs to be taken. Seems like it’s still falling on deaf ears. I just hope we can survive another two years!

  41. Stick it to us, the people again that all congress seems to do well, Makes one sick. So pass the Tax extention part only and sink the rest.

    • This was not negotiating it was folding under the pressure of the presidency and his regime.

Conservatives stand up and be counted…tax cuts across the board ongoing indefinitely. No more unemployment benefits and cut out the rest of the pork as promised.

You cannot have it both ways and then expect the American people to stand up for you come election time and 2012.

  43. Take the power from the government. I wish we could have a simple form to fill out that, we the people decided where we wanted the tax money spent. For example, if you have kids, maybe a good portion of your personal taxes would go to education. Or perhaps you want all your taxes go to defense spending. The point is, we decided, not the government, it is OUR money, leaving it up to the government to use it properly, has not had such good results. I personally am so angry at our government. Just when I think they get it, they have some common sense, they do this. How low can a liberal democrat go before they hit bottom?

  47. Conservatives must continue to put pressure on members of Congress, as go forward in 2011. We also need to grow our numbers at Heritage and the Tea Party.
The elections of 2012 must capture our attention. We must push ourselves to find exceptional candidates to run against incumbents who are not meeting conservative principles.

  49. I wrote many letters, as always, opposing this atrosity. Again the professional politicians ignore us. They have no intention of listening to the”masses” who don’t know what is good for them, while they line each others coffers. Republican, Democrat, they are all of the same ilk. If it takes us the next 4 or 6 cycles, WE WILL NOT FORGET! You are all standing in the unemployment line!

  51. What a HUGE disappointment this whole debacle is. They do not appreciate that the PROBLEM is out of control government spending. It goes to show that the the “cocktail party” Republicans, like McConnell, Kyl, McCain, Graham, Grassley, et.al., are as out-of-touch & tone-deaf as the Dems – almost. Just 6 weeks after the election and they are reverting to back room politics-as-usual. The “Pledge to America” & all the hoopla about “banning” earmarks was just political posturing. If the RINO’s push this through, the Republicans are on a slippery slope to the political dust bin. Long live the Tea Party!

  53. In my opinion 90%?of congress and senators are nothing but thieves stealing from tax payers for their benefits. They vote themselves increase in pay When ever they want.
Each and every Congressman and Senator that has used money from the general fund without repayment should be in prison. Because under the Democrats and L.B. Johnson administration voted to
Put Social Security funds into the general fund to spend and rob us.If a bank CEO stole from savings guess where they would be.This is why SS is in trouble today.
Wake up Washington it’s time for the fare tax and get rid of some over paid government employees. Give the working and honest tax payers some relief.
???where did the seniors cost of living go??I guess it
Helped Congress and the Senators pay increase.

  55. What do Representatives and Senators pay tax on? Do they pay tax on their luxurious health plan? Do they pay tax when they use military aircraft for family vacations? Do they pay tax on all the amenities that they enjoy at our expense? Those of us who work hard and pay taxes should require accountability of those who receive those taxes. I wonder if any investigation is done before any person takes a position in DC or any other state to make sure all of their taxes are up to date? Too many have covered up income from too many sources. Washington has not given us fair government. Let’s have a flat tax that everyone pays and get rid of all the loopholes. The IRS would not be needed if we had that. And all pork barrel proponents should be ousted in the next two elections.

  57. If you have to add billions of dollars to the U.S. debt, then we’d rather pay the extra income taxes. It won’t be good for the economy because we will only be buying the essentials, food, fuell to heat our home and medicine. We will not be buying any clothing, appliances, vehicles, trips, entertainment, etc.

So either just extend the bush tax cuts without all this other bull or forget it..

  59. Will the TEA PARTY stand up this year and call out the GOP at rallies and on Fox News? The GOP is already spending like the past 2 years!!

    • Our politicians can’t ever have a straight up or down vote. They only know how to save money, by spending 10 times as much. This Tax deal is no deal at all . Just a bunch of politics as usual.

  61. I’m with Debby Ring! Now is the moment to start banging the gong on the fair tax, while simultaneously call for across the board pay cuts and pension reviews. A good hard look at the budgets given czars, ( actually, they are commissars! ), and the unconstitutional nature of them should be a major congressional committee assignment, ( which should be managed by reps and Senators working at 20% less annual pay ), and a serious look at repealing the 17th Amendment, restoring States’ rights and eliminating the popularity contests who’s winners think they are Lords and Ladies.
    Can I get a Grrrrr?!

  63. It IS time to say NO to any new legislation !
Folks, we need to stress the power of the people and Healthcare, back room deals, special deals, unconstitutional welfare dollars ALL have to cease!
The TAX system must be overhauled to a National sales tax PERIOD. NO income tax at all. No Medicaid. State Rights must be salvaged and our governors must use their power together as a strong arm against the federal government. Nullify unconstitutional FEDERAL MANDATES.

What kind of leaders do we have that can not use the bully pulpit to rally their citizens for freedom? Speak out to our most important bodies on the local level in state house, senate and the Governor.

It is obvious to me that we have far too many Progressives on both sides of the aisle to get anything done until this Fascist President is ousted so why bang our heads agaist the wall trying to get anything else done. JUST SAY NO .
