New START: A Serious Lame Duck Threat
Editor’s note: Late last week, Heritage Action began sending direct mail to ten states urging Senators to oppose the New START Treaty. Throughout the week, we’ll examine the claims made in the mailer, one-by-one.
The last claim made by the mailer is the most obvious:
Don’t take is from us – listen to the people pushing the treaty.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton:
It certainly would be my preference that it be brought in any lame-duck session in the next several weeks and that is what I am working toward seeing happen.
Senator Foreign Relations Committee Chairman John Kerry (D-MA):
I’m very hopeful. My own personal expectation is that we’re going to try to move to the START treaty and get the START treaty done.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), via spokesman:
Now that the election is over, hopefully the White House and Senate Republicans can reach an agreement that will allow us to ratify the treaty by the end of the year.
On Wednesday, 13 former Senators sent a letter to Senators Reid and Mitch McConnell, urging them “to ensure that the controversial New START Treaty is considered in accordance with the regular order in the course of the 112th Congress.”
Why is it controversial? See the facts below. Then, Take Action to defeat the New START Treaty.
